Easy Homemade Pumpkin Butter

Fall is here! That means I am embracing all of the seasonal flavors in my baking. This easy homemade pumpkin butter is lightly spiced with cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg and contains apple juice and maple syrup to further ramp up the delicious fall flavor profile.

Delicious Ingredients Perfect for Fall

This pumpkin butter is made with 8 ingredients that let fall flavors shine:

  • Pumpkin Puree - provides an earthy and slightly sweet base to this spread. Make sure you use pumpkin puree, NOT pumpkin pie filling.

  • Apple Juice - another staple fall flavor. Make sure you are using the unsweetened variety.

  • Maple Syrup - here is where you can dial in your desired sweetness level. The recipe calls for 1/4 cup, enough to add a hint of that rich maple flavor while letting the natural sweetness of the ingredients be the star, but if you want a sweeter spread you can up that to 1/2 cup.

  • Cinnamon, Clove, and Nutmeg - a small amount of warm fall spices is added to help compliment the other flavors without overpowering.

  • A Pinch of Salt - a flavor enhancer to add dimension. Don’t worry, it won’t make the pumpkin butter taste salty.

Simple Preparation

To make the pumpkin butter simply combine all of the ingredients in a medium saucepan and simmer on medium-low, stirring occasionally, for at least 20 minutes until the excess liquid has evaporated and the mixture thickens.

Some of my favorite ways to use pumpkin butter include:

  • Spreading on toast, bagels, or English muffins for a delicious breakfast or snack

  • Mixing in oatmeal or yogurt

  • Adding to frostings

  • Filling for cakes, cupcakes, or macarons
